LUPIN THE IIIRD: Zenigata and the Two Lupins
Oshimeter
Synopsis
After years of chasing Lupin III, Zenigata's relentless pursuit finally pays off — except there are two of them. Both claim to be the real deal, and neither is backing down. That's the setup for this ONA from Telecom Animation Film, directed by Takeshi Koike, whose angular, gritty art style gives the whole Lupin franchise a harder edge than you might expect. Set in the fictional Roviet Union during the Cold War, the story kicks off with a terrorist bombing at an airport, and Zenigata pins it on his longtime nemesis. But when a second Lupin shows up insisting on his innocence, the inspector's black-and-white worldview starts cracking. This isn't really a Lupin story — it's a Zenigata story, and watching his obsessive sense of justice get tangled in a web of doubles and deception is genuinely compelling. The tone walks a line between tense mystery and that signature Lupin comedy, never fully committing to either, which keeps things unpredictable. If you're into identity puzzles like Detective Conan or you dig the stylish noir action of Cowboy Bebop and Black Lagoon, this hits a similar sweet spot. It also works as a prequel to Fujimi no Ketsuzoku, so there's a larger story being built here. At just one episode, there's no reason not to give it a shot — it's tight, atmospheric, and Koike's animation alone is worth your time.
