Lupin III: Return of Pycal
Oshimeter
Synopsis
A reputation as the world's greatest thief doesn't come without complete conviction that you can steal anything from anyone — a reckless charm that has defined Lupin III's entire career. This one-episode OVA drops him into a Mediterranean heist that goes sideways fast when someone from his past shows up very much not dead. Pycal was a magician Lupin tangled with early in his career, back when his tricks were just tricks. Now Pycal is back, and whatever he's been doing in the years since apparently gave him actual supernatural powers. That changes the math considerably for a thief whose usual tools are wit, disguise, and his partners — sharpshooter Jigen and swordsman Goemon — rather than anything that can stop genuine magic. The gem Lupin came for is still somewhere in the mix, which is very on-brand for him. The tone here is classic Lupin: heist mechanics, dry humor, absurd situations played mostly straight. If you've watched Cowboy Bebop and appreciated that blend of cool action with a loose, episodic structure, Lupin fits comfortably in that same pocket. Fans of City Hunter will also recognize the formula — a roguish protagonist, European settings, and action that doesn't take itself too seriously. At one episode, it asks almost nothing from you, and it works well as either a series entry point or a nostalgic revisit for longtime fans of the franchise. The supernatural angle gives it a slightly different flavor from standard Lupin fare, which makes it worth checking out even if you've seen the show before.
