Little Busters! EX

Every anime has those side characters who deserved more screen time, and Little Busters was no exception. This 8-episode special finally gives them their due. Little Busters! EX focuses on three heroines who got shortchanged in the main series: Saya Tokido, a seemingly ordinary girl who secretly prowls the school halls at night on some kind of mission; Sasami Sasasegawa, Rin's softball rival who's way more layered than her competitive streak suggests; and Kanata Futaki, the ice-cold student council president hiding something behind all that discipline. Each one gets her own arc with Riki, and the stories weave around the events of Refrain in clever ways — some before, some after, one spanning both. The format works well here. With dedicated episodes per heroine, J.C.Staff doesn't have to rush through the emotional beats the way longer visual novel adaptations sometimes do. You still get the trademark Little Busters mix of goofy comedy and gut-punch drama, plus the supernatural undercurrents that made the original series click. If you liked how Clannad handled its side routes or the way Angel Beats! balanced humor with heartbreak, this hits a similar frequency. Fair warning though — this is supplementary material, not a starting point. You really need to have watched Little Busters and Refrain first, or the emotional payoffs won't land the way they should. But if you already love these characters, this is a satisfying extension of their world.
