KenIchi: The Mightiest Disciple
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Meet Kenichi Shirahama — the kind of guy who reads self-help books to cope with getting beat up at karate club. He's nicknamed 'Weak Legs,' which tells you everything about where he starts. Then he meets Miu Furinji, a transfer student who casually flips him onto the ground as a reflex, and things change. She brings him to Ryouzanpaku, her grandfather's dojo, where a handful of absurdly powerful martial arts masters each specialize in a different discipline — karate, muay thai, jiu-jitsu, Chinese kenpo, weapons. They all decide this scrawny kid is their new project, and the training they put him through is genuinely brutal, played for laughs half the time and dead serious the other half. The appeal here is watching someone with zero talent grind his way up through sheer stubbornness. Kenichi doesn't have hidden powers or a secret bloodline. He just keeps showing up and getting hit until he stops falling down. Each master has a wildly different personality and teaching style, which keeps the 50-episode run from feeling repetitive. The comedy lands more often than it doesn't, and when the fights get serious, they actually carry weight because you've watched this dude earn every inch. If you liked the training arcs in Naruto more than the war stuff, or if Baki's over-the-top martial arts energy appeals to you but you want something lighter, this is a good fit. It's also got some of that underdog charm The Law of Ueki had. A solid shounen that doesn't overstay its welcome.
