Kekkaishi

Pastry recipes are what Yoshimori Sumimura would rather be perfecting — but fate has other plans, leaving him to fight demons at night instead. He comes from a family of Kekkaishi, people with the ability to conjure magical barriers called kekkai to trap and destroy Ayakashi, malevolent spirits drawn to the supernatural energy buried beneath his school grounds. Every night, these creatures crawl out of the dark looking to feed, and Yoshimori has to stop them. His neighbor Tokine, from a rival Kekkaishi family, shares the same duty — and the two of them make for a genuinely interesting pair, balancing childhood friendship with very different approaches to the job. What makes this stand out from the usual supernatural action setup is the combat system. Building and collapsing barriers requires precision and strategy, not just raw power, which gives the fights a different texture than most shounen throwdowns. The dynamic between Yoshimori and Tokine carries the quieter moments well too — this is not all action, all the time. If you got into Yu Yu Hakusho or Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan, the mix of yokai lore, territorial battles, and a reluctant teenage protagonist will feel familiar in the best way. Fans of Beyond the Boundary will also find the barrier-based power mechanics scratching a similar itch. Sunrise produced all 52 episodes, and Taku Iwasaki's soundtrack keeps the tone grounded without overdramatizing. It is a slow build, but it earns your investment.
