Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne
Oshimeter
Synopsis
On the surface, Maron Kusakabe is your average 16-year-old — gymnastics, school, the usual. But at night she transforms into Jeanne, a phantom thief who seals demons hiding inside artworks before they corrupt their owners. The catch: once she seals the demon, the artwork vanishes, so everyone thinks she's just stealing things. The police want her arrested. Her best friend Miyako, who happens to be a detective's daughter, is personally hunting her down. And Maron can't say a word about any of it. The hook that makes it genuinely interesting is the Jeanne d'Arc angle. Maron is literally the reincarnation of the historical figure, guided by a tiny angel named Fin Fish, operating under divine orders she doesn't fully understand. Then a new neighbor moves in next door — charming, suspicious, clearly hiding something — and suddenly there's a rival thief working the same scene. The tone balances lighthearted high school drama with something that gradually gets more emotionally complicated. Don't expect it to stay fluffy. The 44-episode run from Toei Animation gives the story room to breathe and develop the relationships properly, which is where it earns its reputation. If you liked Kaitou Saint Tail's phantom thief premise or D.N.Angel's mix of romance and supernatural heists, this covers similar ground but leans harder into the emotional weight. Fans of classic Sailor Moon-era shoujo will feel at home here — it's that same late-90s energy, minus the large ensemble cast.
