Karakuri Circus

Synopsis
A strange affliction forces Narumi Katō to make someone laugh or suffer violent seizures. That's already a weird premise, but it gets wilder. He stumbles into protecting Masaru Saiga, an 11-year-old kid who just inherited a massive fortune and is now being hunted by assassins who fight using giant, terrifyingly lifelike puppets. Then a mysterious silver-haired woman named Shirogane shows up with her own combat puppet, Harlequin, and suddenly you're watching martial arts mixed with mechanical marionette battles set against a dark circus aesthetic. It's a lot, and the show knows it. Karakuri Circus is a 36-episode TV series adapted from a lengthy shounen manga, and it covers a sprawling story that weaves together three characters' journeys across different timelines and continents. The puppet combat system is genuinely unique — these aren't just weapons, they're full mechanical beings with their own lore and history. The circus theme isn't window dressing either; it feeds into the atmosphere, the villain designs, and even the emotional core of the story. If you liked Ushio and Tora (same original manga author, actually), you'll feel right at home with the emotional intensity here. Fans of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood will appreciate how it balances mystery, action, and character drama across a large cast. And like Hunter x Hunter, it's willing to go to darker places than you'd expect from its genre. The pacing can feel compressed given how much source material it's covering, but the emotional payoffs still land.
