In a Distant Time: Character Endings
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Just a regular high school girl, Akane Motomiya gets pulled through a gate into a parallel world along with her two friends, but that world happens to be modeled after Heian-era Kyoto, think imperial courts, flowing robes, and political tension layered over genuine supernatural danger. Once there, she's declared the Priestess of the Dragon God, which sounds prestigious until you realize it means she's now responsible for protecting this entire realm from an encroaching Oni Clan, flanked by eight guardians called the Hachiyou who each bring their own abilities and personalities into the mix. This particular release is a set of 8 short specials that pick up after the main TV series, so they work as a quiet extended epilogue rather than a standalone entry point. The tone leans romantic and atmospheric — it's less about battles and more about Akane settling into her relationships with the Hachiyou and figuring out what her role actually means on a personal level. If you liked Fushigi Yugi and its blend of historical fantasy with a girl surrounded by devoted guardians, this scratches a very similar itch. It also shares some DNA with Hiiro no Kakera if you enjoy the otome-style character dynamics without things getting too dark. The Heian setting gives it a distinctly elegant feel that fans of Juuni Kokuki's world-building will probably appreciate, even if this is considerably softer in tone. Worth watching after the main series if you want a little more time with these characters.
