Harukanaru Toki no Naka de: Hachiyou Shou OVA
Oshimeter
Synopsis
A missing item throws eight guardians and one priestess into chaos — that's the setup for this two-episode OVA companion to Harukanaru Toki no Naka de: Hachiyou Shou. If you've already spent time with Akane and her eight devoted protectors in Heian-period Kyoto, this is essentially a bonus hang with the full cast in a much lighter register. The first episode drops the four Heavenly Hachiyou into a low-stakes mystery where everyone suspects everyone else of a minor offense, and Akane gets pulled in to sort it out. It's the kind of story where the relationships carry the humor — you need to already care about these guys for the bickering to land. The second episode shifts to the Earth guardians, where a spirited Kotengu decides today is the day to pick a fight with Yasuaki, and naturally the others have feelings about that. Both stories are short, warm, and genuinely funny without trying too hard. The Heian aesthetic stays intact, the character dynamics are the whole point, and the tone is closer to a cast reunion than a dramatic arc. If you liked Fushigi Yugi or Hiiro no Kakera and wanted more quiet, character-focused moments between the action, this scratches that itch. It's not an entry point — watch the main series first — but as a companion piece, it does exactly what a good OVA should: remind you why you liked these characters in the first place.
