Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Oshimeter
Synopsis
By 2030, cybernetic body modification is so common that people routinely replace limbs, eyes, and even entire bodies with machine parts. Major Motoko Kusanagi is one of the most extreme cases — a full-body cyborg who leads Section 9, a government black-ops unit that handles cybercrimes too complex or too politically sensitive for regular police. Her team investigates hackers who can hijack human brains, ghost-hack politicians, and disappear without a trace. Early on, they pick up a thread involving a mysterious figure called the Laughing Man, and things get complicated fast. The standalone episodes each work as self-contained crime cases, but underneath them, something larger is building. It rewards patience. The show is genuinely interested in hard questions — if you replace every part of your body with machinery, what makes you still you? It never gets preachy about it, though. It just lets the cases do the talking. The animation holds up surprisingly well for 2002, and Production I.G clearly put real craft into it. If you watched Serial Experiments Lain and wanted something more grounded, or if Ergo Proxy's world-building clicked with you but you wanted tighter plotting, this is the natural next step. It sits somewhere between police procedural and philosophy lecture, in a way that actually works. 26 episodes, seinen demographic, and it earns every minute.
