Synopsis
When a machine-man hybrid nobleman murders his mother, a young boy named Tetsurou is left with nothing — nothing except a burning desire for revenge and a ticket to board the Galaxy Express 999 — a massive space train that crosses the universe, stopping at different worlds along the way. At the final destination, legend has it you can receive a mechanical body for free, which means immortality for people who can't afford to buy it outright. A mysterious woman named Maetel offers him a pass on one condition: they travel together. Neither of them fully explains why. That tension carries the whole series. Each planet they visit is basically its own short story — strange civilizations, moral dilemmas, people who traded something human for something mechanical and may or may not regret it. It's slow, episodic, and very much a product of 1978, so adjust your expectations accordingly. But the questions it keeps asking — what do you lose when you stop being mortal, what does it mean to stay human — hit differently than you'd expect from a retro space train adventure. The art style is pure Leiji Matsumoto: elongated figures, moody starfields, that specific kind of melancholy. If you appreciated the quiet, wandering tone of Kino's Journey or the dreamlike atmosphere of Night on the Galactic Railroad, this sits in similar territory. 113 episodes is a real commitment, but it earns the time.
