Synopsis

A girl tumbles down the stairs, and the boy who catches her discovers she weighs almost nothing. That's the kind of show this is — every encounter with a new character comes with a strange supernatural affliction, and Koyomi, who barely survived a vampire attack himself, keeps getting pulled into solving them. Bakemonogatari is a 15-episode TV series from Shaft that's less about action and more about two people sitting in a room having the sharpest, most layered conversation you've ever heard in anime. Hitagi Senjougahara, the weightless girl, is one of the best-written female leads in the medium — guarded, cutting, vulnerable in ways she'd never admit. The romance between her and Koyomi develops through wordplay and deflection rather than grand gestures, and it's genuinely compelling. Visually, the show is unlike anything else. Shaft's avant-garde direction uses text flashes, color shifts, and stark architectural framing to create something that feels more like an art installation than a standard anime. It can be disorienting at first, but once it clicks, nothing else looks quite right anymore. If you liked the atmosphere and supernatural detective work in The Garden of Sinners, or the quiet strangeness of xxxHolic where spirits intertwine with personal trauma, this hits a similar space — just with more romantic tension and dialogue that rewards close attention. Based on the light novels by NisiOisiN, and the start of a much larger series if it hooks you.
