Aim for the Ace!: The Movie
Oshimeter
Synopsis
What starts as a simple excuse to be near someone she admires leads Hiromi Oka to join her high school tennis club — drawn to the elegant senior Reika Ryuuzaki, nicknamed 'Madame Butterfly' for the way she moves on the court. Hiromi is a total beginner, mostly just hoping to be near someone she admires. Then the new coach, Jin Munakata, walks in and immediately picks Hiromi — the least experienced player on the team — to compete in an upcoming tournament. Nobody understands it. Hiromi definitely doesn't understand it. And the pressure from her teammates makes her seriously consider quitting altogether. What keeps her going is something she has to figure out for herself. This is a movie condensing the classic 1973 shoujo manga into a tight single watch, directed by Osamu Dezaki, whose visual style gives even quiet moments a real weight to them. The mentor-student dynamic between Hiromi and Munakata carries a lot of the emotional load — it's intense without being melodramatic, which is harder to pull off than it sounds. If you grew up with The Prince of Tennis or got into sports anime through Attack No. 1, this is essentially the blueprint for that whole character-driven underdog structure. It's romantic in the old-school sense — youthful, earnest, and genuinely invested in one girl deciding what she actually wants from her own life. At under two hours, it asks very little of your time.
