Ace wo Nerae! Final Stage
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Natural talent was never something Hiromi Oka had, but she picked up a tennis racket and simply refuses to stop swinging it. Ace wo Nerae! Final Stage is the concluding chapter of her story — a 12-episode OVA from 1989 that follows Hiromi as she pushes through serious competition and the quieter, harder work of figuring out who she's becoming as a person. Her coach Jin Munakata keeps raising the bar, her rival Reika Ryuzaki keeps the pressure on, and Hiromi keeps grinding. The sports drama here is genuine — not just a backdrop for romance or comic relief, but the actual emotional engine of the show. Directed by Osamu Dezaki, whose visual style (those dramatic freeze frames, the painterly backgrounds) gives the whole thing a weight that feels almost cinematic for its era. The animation has that late-80s texture that fans of older shoujo will immediately recognize and appreciate. If you grew up on YAWARA! or Attack No.1, this fits right alongside those — same spirit of a young woman earning every inch of her growth through sheer stubbornness. If you liked The Prince of Tennis but want something more emotionally grounded and less over-the-top, Hiromi's journey trades supernatural power levels for raw perseverance. It's a slower burn, but the kind that actually sticks with you.
