Wukong
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Demons have overrun the earth when a stone falls from the sky, and from it emerges a stone monkey — not the all-powerful Monkey King you already know, but the version of Sun Wukong who hasn't figured out what he is yet. Da Yuan Hun is an origin story set before the legend, following Wukong as he stumbles into a world where demons are wiping out entire populations and someone needs to step up. The catch is he's just a newborn creature with no training, no allies, and no idea why he exists. The 12-episode ONA from studio BYMENT adapts a manga source and leans hard into martial arts choreography with a visual style that blends traditional Chinese ink painting aesthetics into modern animation. The fights have weight to them, grounded in a mysticism-based power system that feels earned rather than thrown at you. The soundtrack pulls in traditional Chinese instruments, which gives the whole thing a texture you don't get from most action fantasy shows. If you've been watching stuff like Rakshasa Street or Guardians of the Dafeng and want another Chinese fantasy series with solid action and mythological roots, this fits right in that lane. It's darker than most Journey to the West adaptations tend to be — less comedic trickster energy, more "the world is ending and this monkey might be the only thing standing between humanity and extinction." Worth the time if you're into donghua that takes its source mythology seriously.
