EPISODE CONTEXT
After Episodes 1-2 established Ataru and Lum's contentious dynamic and the fallout on Ataru's relationship with Shinobu, Episode 3 expands the core cast with Shuutarou Mendou — a pivotal addition who becomes a recurring rival and romantic complication for the rest of the season. This is still early in the 23-episode run, firmly in the character introduction phase, and Mendou's arrival sets the foundation for escalating love triangle (and polygon) comedy that will fuel much of the season's conflict ahead.
