EPISODE CONTEXT
As the first of twelve episodes, 'Hakone' exists purely to establish the emotional contract with the audience — introducing Youko and Airi, their dynamic, and the post-apocalyptic Japan they'll be touring throughout the season. There's no prior context needed; this is ground zero. It leads directly into Episode 2, 'Yokohama Yokosuka,' continuing the duo's journey through Japan's abandoned landmarks in what appears to be a location-driven episodic structure.
