Tokyo Ghoul: Jack

Long before the CCG's legendary Reaper became a figure everyone in Tokyo Ghoul either feared or revered, Kishou Arima was a quiet high schooler with a secret side gig: hunting man-eating ghouls in Tokyo's 13th Ward. This OVA tells that story through the eyes of Taishi Fura, a former baseball player who's drifted into delinquency and doesn't have much going on until he watches a ghoul called Lantern tear through people he actually cares about. Fura ends up partnering with Arima, his classmate who turns out to be an undercover CCG investigator, and the two of them start tracking ghouls together — with Lantern as the main target. The whole thing is one episode, so it's tight and focused. No filler, no detours. You get this dark, youthful energy — two teenagers navigating something way beyond what they should be dealing with, one driven by revenge and the other already eerily calm about the violence. It fills in a piece of Arima's backstory that the main series only hints at, and seeing him this young adds a layer of tragedy to everything you already know about him. If you liked the body-horror tension of Parasyte: The Maxim or the way Ajin: Demi-Human handles its action with a psychological edge, this hits a similar nerve. It's a quick watch that rewards anyone already invested in the Tokyo Ghoul universe, but honestly works fine on its own as a compact, dark little story about two kids in over their heads.
