The Promised Neverland
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Nestled in the woods sits a gorgeous house where a group of orphans are raised by a loving woman they call Mama. They take tests, play outside, and every so often one of them gets adopted and leaves for a new family. Sounds wholesome, right? By the end of episode one, you'll understand why this 12-episode TV series is tagged psychological horror. Emma, Norman, and Ray are the three smartest kids at Grace Field House, and when they stumble onto the truth about what "adoption" really means, the show becomes an incredibly tense cat-and-mouse game between children and the adult who controls every aspect of their lives. What makes it work is that Mama Isabella isn't some cartoonish villain — she's sharp, calm, and always three steps ahead. The kids have to outthink her while pretending nothing has changed, and every conversation becomes loaded with double meanings. CloverWorks nailed the atmosphere here. There are no cheap jump scares, just this creeping dread that builds across every episode. The mystery peels back in layers, and the world turns out to be way bigger and darker than the orphanage walls suggest. If you liked the early tension of Attack on Titan where everything you thought you knew gets flipped, or the deceptively dark world of Made in Abyss, this hits similar notes. Fans of Death Note's strategic mind games will feel right at home too. It's only 12 episodes, so it doesn't waste your time.
