The Millionaire Detective – Balance: Unlimited
Oshimeter
Synopsis
When a hostage crisis erupts, Daisuke Kanbe strolls in and literally buys his way out of it. Not with negotiation skills or clever detective work — he just throws money at the problem until it goes away. That's the kind of guy Haru Katou, a by-the-book detective with actual principles, gets stuck partnering with at the Modern Crime Prevention Headquarters, a dumping ground for officers nobody else wants. This 11-episode TV series from CloverWorks is a modernized take on Yasutaka Tsutsui's classic novel, and the central dynamic between these two carries the whole thing. Daisuke treats every crime like a transaction while Haru believes in doing things the right way, and watching their philosophies grind against each other is genuinely entertaining. The mysteries themselves start relatively light with some comedic flair, but there's a larger thread pulling everything together that gives the back half real weight. The animation is clean, the soundtrack hits, and Tokyo looks great as a backdrop. If you liked the stylish crime-solving energy of Great Pretender or the moral tension in Psycho-Pass, this scratches a similar itch but with its own flavor. It's also got that buddy-cop friction that Detective Conan fans might appreciate if they've ever wanted the dynamic between two adults who fundamentally disagree on how justice works. Short enough to finish in a weekend, sharp enough to stay interesting the whole way through.
