After being defeated by a hero, the Devil King finds himself stranded in modern-day Tokyo, where he must adapt to a new life of minimum wage work.

📖 SYNOPSIS

Just as he's about to conquer the entire world of Ente Isla, Satan has everything ruined by the hero Emilia, who forces him to flee through a portal. He ends up in modern-day Tokyo, stripped of his powers, stuck in a human body, and completely broke. His solution? Get a part-time job at MgRonald's — basically fantasy McDonald's — and work his way up from the bottom. His loyal general Alsiel becomes his penny-pinching roommate in a tiny apartment, obsessing over grocery budgets instead of battle strategies. Then Emilia shows up in Tokyo too, going by Emi Yusa, furious that she tracked down her mortal enemy only to find him cheerfully flipping burgers and trying to earn employee of the month.

This 13-episode TV series from White Fox nails the comedy of taking an all-powerful villain and dropping him into the most mundane existence possible. The humor comes from how seriously Maou takes his minimum-wage job and how genuinely frustrated Emi gets that she can't justify fighting a guy whose biggest concern is paying rent on time. Their dynamic carries the whole show — former enemies forced into awkward proximity, with neither one quite able to let go of who they were.

If you liked Noragami's blend of gods dealing with everyday human nonsense, or the premise of I Couldn't Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job, this hits a similar sweet spot. It's a reverse isekai that's more concerned with budgeting and customer service than epic battles, and it works way better than it has any right to.

✨ MUST WATCH IF...

You love fish-out-of-water comedy — a Demon Lord flipping burgers at MgRonald's is peak absurdity
The Maou-Emilia rivalry-to-banter dynamic is the kind of character chemistry you live for
White Fox's action scenes hit hard when the fantasy battles actually kick in mid-season
You enjoy fantasy tropes getting subverted — world domination takes a backseat to earning rent money

❌ SKIP IF...

You want a fully resolved story — several plot threads stay open after just 13 episodes
Non-stop action is what you're after — this leans heavily into slice-of-life comedy instead
You expect deep character arcs — most of the cast sticks close to their archetypes throughout
