The Cat Returns
Oshimeter
Synopsis
After unassuming high schooler Haru Yoshioka saves a cat from getting hit by a truck, that cat turns out to be a prince. Now the Cat King wants her to marry his son, and through a series of miscommunications, everyone in the Cat Kingdom thinks she said yes. That's the setup for this 2002 Studio Ghibli movie, and it only gets more charming from there. Haru ends up seeking help from the Cat Bureau, run by Baron Humbert von Gikkingen, a cat figurine who's somehow alive and impossibly suave, and Muta, a grumpy oversized cat who mostly just wants to eat. Together they navigate the whimsical Cat Kingdom, which is gorgeous in that distinctly Ghibli way — every frame feels warm and handcrafted. The vibe here is lighter than most Ghibli films. It's not trying to make you cry or wrestle with big existential questions. It's more like a cozy afternoon adventure with talking cats and a protagonist figuring out she's allowed to stand up for herself. Yuji Nomi's soundtrack ties the whole thing together with this gentle, playful energy. If you liked Spirited Away's "girl trapped in a magical world" premise but want something more relaxed, this is your movie. Fans of Whisper of the Heart will also notice some fun connections, since Baron appears in both. It's 75 minutes of pure comfort.
