Supernatural: The Anime Series
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Sam and Dean Winchester tear across America in a '67 Impala, killing every monster that crosses their path — shapeshifters, demons, vengeful spirits, you name it. If that sounds familiar, yeah, this is the live-action Supernatural adapted into anime form by Madhouse, and honestly it works way better than you'd expect. Sam and Dean Winchester lost their mother to something evil when they were kids, and their father raised them as hunters. Now they're on the road, tracking down whatever goes bump in the night while searching for their missing dad. The first couple episodes throw you right into it — a shapeshifter taking on people's faces to frame them for murder, classic monster-of-the-week horror that the show always did well. What makes this OVA worth your time even if you've seen the live-action is that Madhouse added original episodes and backstory that the TV series never covered, filling in gaps in the brothers' history. The animation is dark, gritty, and lets the supernatural elements get way more visually intense than a TV budget ever could. The 22-episode run roughly covers the first two seasons but with its own spin. If you liked the gothic horror vibes of Hellsing or the demon-hunting grind of D.Gray-man, this scratches a similar itch. Fans of Blood+ will appreciate the tone too — brooding, violent, and not afraid to linger in the dark. It's a solid watch whether you know the source material or not.
