Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Things are actually going well for Sakuta Azusagawa for a change — he's dating Mai Sakurajima, a former child actress who also happens to be the bunny girl he met in a library six months ago (long story). But his peaceful routine gets shattered when two versions of his first crush, Shouko Makinohara, show up in his life simultaneously: one as an adult, the other as a middle schooler in the hospital with a serious illness. Neither version should exist the way they do, and his old chest scars — remnants of a previous brush with the supernatural 'Puberty Syndrome' — start aching again. This movie picks up right where the TV series left off, and it goes places. The relationship between Sakuta, Mai, and Shouko gets tangled in ways that feel genuinely painful rather than contrived. CloverWorks brings the same grounded visual style from the show, letting the emotional weight do the heavy lifting instead of flashy set pieces. The supernatural elements stay rooted in real feelings — grief, self-sacrifice, the terror of losing someone — which is what makes the whole thing land so hard. If Clannad: After Story wrecked you, or if Your Name left you wanting something that digs even deeper into its characters, this is in that same territory. Fair warning though: you need to watch the TV series first, and you should probably have tissues ready. It earns every bit of its emotional payoff.
