EPISODE CONTEXT
Coming off Ash's hard-fought victory against Brock in Pewter City, this episode serves as a transitional adventure that deepens the world-building before the crew reaches Cerulean City and its next gym challenge. Mt. Moon acts as both a geographic and narrative bridge, giving the newly formed trio of Ash, Misty, and Brock their first real team outing in the wild. It also expands the show's mythology early, establishing that Pokémon lore runs deeper than just battles and badges.
