EPISODE CONTEXT
Episode 5 marks a critical milestone — Ash's first official Gym battle after four episodes of establishing his raw, underprepared approach to being a trainer. The journey through Viridian Forest and encounters with Team Rocket built foundational skills, and now Pewter City tests whether any of it stuck. More importantly, this episode introduces Brock, who becomes one of the series' most enduring companions, setting the trajectory for the long road of Gym Badge collection ahead.
