Synopsis

Matsunaga Gengo was once the greatest fire-fighting samurai in Edo, nicknamed the 'Fire-Eating Bird' for his ability to stop blazes that no one else could. Then he walked away from it all. The story picks up when Gengo gets recruited by the Shinjo clan to lead their fire brigade, except this isn't some elite squad — it's a broke, understaffed, laughingstock of a team called the 'Boro Tobi-gumi,' which literally translates to 'Ragged Steeplejacks.' With his wife Miyuki pushing him to give it another shot, Gengo starts pulling together a ragtag crew: an acrobat named Hikoya, a former sumo wrestler called Torajirou, and other misfits who have something to prove. Meanwhile, mysterious arsons dubbed 'foxfires' are spreading across the city, and nobody knows who's behind them. The vibe here is redemption through teamwork, set against an authentic depiction of Edo-period firefighting — the actual tools, techniques, and culture of it. Takanashi Yasuharu is handling the soundtrack, which should give you a sense of the atmosphere they're going for. If you liked the wandering-warrior-finds-purpose energy of Rurouni Kenshin, or the way Golden Kamuy blends historical detail with a cast of weirdos who somehow become a family, this feels like it's operating in that same space. Based on a novel, animated by SynergySP, coming in 2026.

Delivers the strongest tension in the series so far by turning a festival into a terrifying coordinated disaster. The fire sequences feel chaotic yet strategic, showing how deadly Edo’s wooden streets truly are. Gengo’s leadership shines during the evacuation scenes, while Shinza’s fear adds emotional realism to the brigade. SEijuro also shines in this one, as he showcases his knowledge of the wind direction with his scientific observation. The smoky lighting, burning lantern visuals, and pounding soundtrack create an intense historical atmosphere. The final Foxfire clue perfectly raises the mystery.

The introduction of Shiun adds a layer of mystery that makes the foxfire conspiracy feel more intelligent and dangerous. The candlelit observatory scenes looked gorgeous, giving the episode a calm but uneasy mood. Hikoya’s interactions with the astronomer’s son also helped humanize the brigade further. The pacing is slower, but the emotional storytelling and historical vibe make this one of the series’ most immersive episodes so far. This episode trades nonstop action for knowledge in atmosphere and character depth, and it works surprisingly well.

Delivers the strongest character writing so far by introducing Hikoya, whose debt-ridden lifestyle contrasts perfectly with Gengo’s quiet discipline. The episode balances emotional drama with tense fire-rescue sequences, and the rooftop animation during the burning alley scene looked fantastic. The foxfire mystery keeps growing in the background without overshadowing the human story. Its smoky Edo atmosphere, strong pacing, and grounded themes make this episode surprisingly heartfelt and immersive.
