Nightwalker: The Midnight Detective
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Running a detective agency with zero memory of his own past, Shido Tatsuhiko takes on cases involving missing persons and strange murders — and happens to be a vampire. That combination alone should tell you this TV series has a specific vibe going on. Set in a moody, rain-soaked modern Japanese city, Night Walker follows Shido and his small crew — a government agent named Yayoi who works a supernatural crimes division, a teenage orphan named Riho who handles his office, and Guni, a small green imp who keeps things from getting too grim. Together they deal with Nightbreeds, demonic creatures bleeding into the human world and leaving bodies behind. The cases feel grounded enough that the horror lands, and the detective structure gives each episode a satisfying shape. Underneath that, there's a longer thread about Cain, the vampire who turned Shido, circling closer as the series goes on. The late 90s AIC art style fits the atmosphere well — it's dark without being grimy, and the soundtrack does real work in keeping things tense. If you liked the monster-of-the-week rhythm of Hellsing or the brooding vampire protagonist energy of Vampire Hunter D, this scratches a similar itch. Fans of Blood+ who wanted something more noir-flavored might also find this worth their time. It's 12 episodes, based on a visual novel, and wastes very little of that runtime.
