📖 SYNOPSIS

Uprooted from everything she knows and dropped into an unfamiliar town, a kid barely has time to settle before her grandmother takes her to the local summer festival. Lanterns, food stalls she's never seen before, crowds of strangers laughing and moving in every direction — it's overwhelming and beautiful and a little disorienting. Then she turns around and her grandmother is gone.

That's the whole setup for Natsumatsuri, a short drama movie from Au Praxinoscope, and honestly it doesn't need more than that. What follows is this quiet, emotionally layered little story about a kid navigating a place she doesn't know, surrounded by people she hasn't met, trying to find the one person who makes her feel safe. It's about what it actually feels like to be new somewhere — not in a dramatic, plot-heavy way, but in that slow, anxious, sensory-overload kind of way.

The festival setting does a lot of heavy lifting here. You can practically smell the yakisoba and hear the taiko drums. It captures that specific atmosphere of Japanese summer festivals with real care, and uses it as the backdrop for a story about family, growing up, and learning to be okay even when things feel uncertain.

If you liked the emotional intimacy of Anohana or the gentle, grounded feel of Kamichu, this one hits a similar nerve. It's short, it's tender, and it lingers with you after it's done.
