Mushi-Shi
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Wandering from village to village, Ginko earns his keep as a 'Mushi Master' — think a traveling doctor, except his patients are afflicted by things most people can't even see, and he drifts from place to place to find them. Mushi are these ethereal, primordial beings that exist somewhere between life and nature itself. They can become a boy's drawings that bleed into reality, a strange light that steals your sight, or a sound only one person can hear. Ginko drifts from village to village across a countryside that feels like old Japan, figuring out what's happening and whether anything can be done about it. Sometimes he can help. Sometimes he can't. This 26-episode TV series from Artland is almost entirely episodic — each episode is its own self-contained story with new characters, new problems, and a new corner of the world. There's no overarching villain, no power scaling, no tournament arc. It's quiet. The soundtrack sits somewhere between ambient and folk, and the art makes forests and rivers look like watercolor paintings you want to step into. The whole thing has this meditative, mysterious quality where you feel like you're sitting on a porch watching rain fall. If you liked the gentle supernatural tone of Natsume's Book of Friends but want something aimed a little more at adults, or if you vibed with the eerie folklore of Requiem from the Darkness, this is exactly your lane. Perfect for watching one episode at a time before bed — not because it's boring, but because each one deserves space to breathe.
