Synopsis

As the right-hand man to a bored, tyrannical corporate chairman, Yukio Tonegawa one day receives a casual order to organize a 'game of death' for entertainment. You'd think this would be intense and high-stakes — and in the original Kaiji series, it absolutely is — but here, the real nightmare is middle management. Tonegawa has to wrangle a team of subordinates who can't even agree on seating arrangements, navigate his boss's completely unhinged mood swings, and somehow keep his dignity intact through all of it. This 24-episode TV series from Madhouse takes the brutal, sweat-dripping tension of Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor and flips it into a workplace comedy about the guy who has to actually set up all that dramatic stuff behind the scenes. The exaggerated art style — all sharp angles and intense shading — stays intact, which makes it even funnier when the life-or-death narration is describing something like a failed team-building exercise. If you've ever sat through a pointless meeting run by someone who clearly has no idea what they're doing, you'll feel this one in your bones. Think of it like Aggretsuko but from the perspective of someone higher up the corporate ladder who's somehow even more miserable. Fans of Detroit Metal City's deadpan absurdity will also find a lot to like here. It's a seinen comedy that understands the quiet horror of organizational dysfunction better than most actual workplace dramas.
