When a colony drop levels Sydney, somehow three kids walk out of the wreckage alive, earning the label "Miracle Children." Years later, they're broken adults scattered across different sides of a political chessboard, and a ghost from their past just showed up — a golden mobile suit called the Phenex that vanished two years ago and now reappears with no pilot and no explanation. Jona Basta, one of those kids turned Federation pilot, gets pulled into a multi-faction race to capture it, alongside his childhood friends Michele and Rita, each carrying their own secrets and trauma. This is Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative, a 2018 movie set in Universal Century 0097, right after the events of Gundam Unicorn. If you liked Unicorn's exploration of Newtypes and psycho-frame weirdness, this picks up that thread and runs with it — what happens when mobile suits start exhibiting power that feels more supernatural than mechanical. The tone is heavy and emotional, grounded in the kind of wartime grief and political maneuvering you'd expect from UC Gundam, but with a personal story at its core about three people bound together by something they experienced as children. Hiroyuki Sawano handles the soundtrack, so the emotional beats hit exactly the way you'd expect. If Gundam Thunderbolt or War in the Pocket appealed to you for their smaller, more human-scale stories set against larger conflicts, Narrative works in that same space. Sunrise's animation holds up its end of the bargain — the mecha sequences look fantastic.
