Mama is Just a Fourth Grade Pupil
Oshimeter
Synopsis
When her parents relocate to London, Natsumi Mizuki — a fourth-grader — is left in the care of her Aunt Izumi, a chaotic, deadline-chasing manga artist who barely has time to feed herself, let alone a kid. Then, on Natsumi's first night alone, a baby appears out of nowhere. The baby's name is Mirai, and she's Natsumi's own daughter from fifteen years in the future. Somehow, little Mirai got yanked back through time, and now ten-year-old Natsumi is responsible for raising her. A baby. While going to school. While keeping the whole situation secret from basically everyone. The premise sounds ridiculous, and honestly, it kind of is — but that's what makes it work. The show leans into the absurdity while also being genuinely warm about what it means to care for someone who depends entirely on you, which hits differently when the person doing the caring is still figuring out long division. If you grew up watching Daa! Daa! Daa! and loved the chaotic-baby-in-the-house energy, this is the earlier, slightly more grounded version of that. It also scratches a similar itch to Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms if you want that emotional thread of unconventional motherhood, just with way more comedy and a lot less tragedy. Sunrise produced all 51 episodes of this 1992 TV series, and the pacing gives the relationships real room to breathe. It's a slow build, but the kind worth sticking with.
