Despite what the title suggests, Mahou Shoujo Ai is a 5-episode OVA that leans hard into horror territory. Akitoshi is a high school student in a town where people keep getting brutally attacked under strange circumstances. Then he has a nightmare where his friends are hunted down by something monstrous, only saved by a mysterious woman with a spear. The next day, a girl who looks exactly like that woman transfers into his class — and weirdly, everyone acts like they already know her, except him. That disconnect is genuinely unsettling, and it pulls him into digging deeper into what's actually happening in this town. Based on a visual novel from 2003, the setup blends supernatural horror with dark, mature themes in a way that feels more like a thriller than a typical genre entry. If you liked the way Mahou Shoujo Site or Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku stripped the warmth out of the magical girl concept and replaced it with something grimmer, this sits in that same uncomfortable space. Fans of Madoka Magica who want something even more explicit about its darkness might find it interesting as a historical curiosity from that era.
