Magical Project S Specials
Oshimeter
Synopsis
When a magical princess named Tsunami taps cheerful elementary schooler Sasami Kawai to become Pretty Sammy, she's suddenly tasked with keeping the balance between the human world and the magical realm of Juraihelm. Standard magical girl setup — except this one knows exactly what genre it's in and has fun poking holes in it. Her best friend Misao gets brainwashed into a chaos-causing rival named Pixy Misa, which means Sammy is regularly fighting someone she genuinely cares about while also dealing with homework and the general awkwardness of being a kid. The tone stays light and comedic throughout, leaning into the absurdity rather than playing it straight. These seven specials from 1997 also connect to the Tenchi Muyo universe, so if you're already familiar with that world, there are layers here that add some extra flavor. If you grew up watching Sailor Moon or Cardcaptor Sakura and want something that affectionately teases those shows rather than imitating them, this scratches that itch. It's not trying to reinvent anything — it's more like a knowing wink from a studio that understood the genre well enough to play with it. Fans of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha who want something shorter and less serious would also find this comfortable. Produced by AIC, the same studio behind the original Tenchi OVAs, so the production DNA is familiar and the humor lands in a similar register.
