Maetel Legend
Oshimeter
Synopsis
When a queen decides to mechanize her entire population just to survive the death of their planet La Metalle, whose artificial sun is flickering out, her daughters can't accept it. That's the premise of Maetel Legend, a two-episode OVA from 2000 that tells the origin story of Maetel and Emeraldas, two of the most iconic figures in Leiji Matsumoto's universe. If those names don't mean anything to you yet, think of this as the backstory that makes Galaxy Express 999 hit harder. If you've already seen that series, this is exactly what you've been missing. The whole thing has that heavy, contemplative quality Matsumoto's work is known for — wide starfields, melancholy pacing, questions about what it means to stay human when survival demands you stop being one. It's not action-driven. It's more like watching two sisters refuse to let the world decide who they are. The art carries that classic Matsumoto look: elongated figures, expressive faces, a kind of elegant sadness baked into every frame. It connects loosely to Queen Millennia as well, so fans of that series will find familiar threads here. At only two episodes, it's a small commitment for a story that adds real emotional weight to one of anime's most underappreciated sci-fi universes. Worth the hour if you're in the mood for something quiet and genuinely melancholy.
