Kinokoinu Mushroom Pup
Oshimeter
Synopsis
For two months now, picture book writer Hotaru Yuuyami hasn't written a single word — grief has completely hollowed him out. His dog Hanako — his last family member — just died, and the grief has hollowed him out completely. His childhood friend and editor Tsubaki keeps checking in, but nothing's landing. Then one morning, a weird pink mushroom sprouts in his garden and turns into a dog-shaped creature. Hotaru, being the kind of emotionally fragile person who would absolutely do this, immediately adopts it and names it Kinoko Inu. Tsubaki is not thrilled. This 12-episode TV series from C-Station is a quiet, wholesome seinen that's really about grief and what fills the space after loss. The mushroom dog concept sounds goofy on paper, but the show plays it surprisingly straight — there's genuine warmth here, and a thread of mystery around what Kinoko Inu actually is, especially once a researcher named Komako gets involved. The animation has this nice blend of grounded realism and soft fantasy that fits the tone perfectly, and the soundtrack does a lot of heavy lifting in the emotional moments. If you liked the gentle melancholy of Spirits & Cat Ears or the way Inu × Boku SS mixed supernatural elements with character-driven storytelling, this hits a similar frequency. It's slice-of-life with just enough weirdness to keep things interesting, and it treats its themes of healing with a patience you don't always see. Based on a seinen manga, so expect something more reflective than cutesy.
