Kaiju No. 8 Season 2
Oshimeter
Synopsis
At 32 years old and still stuck as a low-ranking kaijuu exterminator, Kafka Hibino got swallowed by a monster and became one himself — and now the military he works for has to decide whether to kill him or use him. Season 1 ended with the Defense Force locking Kafka up after discovering his secret. This second season picks up with the brass making a gamble: transfer him to the First Division, the most elite squad in the organization, under Captain Gen Narumi. The catch is that nobody there trusts him. He's literally the thing they're trained to destroy, and now he has to fight alongside people who'd rather put a bullet in him. The early episodes throw Kafka straight into combat against waves of ant-like kaijuu, and Production I.G does not hold back on the animation. The action sequences are fluid and weighty in a way that makes you feel every hit. There's a solid military hierarchy running through everything — ranks matter, chain of command matters, and Kafka sits at the bottom of all of it despite housing the power of a walking catastrophe. If you liked the human-monster identity crisis in Tokyo Ghoul or the military tension of Attack on Titan, this hits similar notes but with a slightly lighter touch. It's 11 episodes, so it stays tight. The opening theme by Aurora sets a surprisingly moody tone that fits the whole "you can't outrun what you've become" thread running through Kafka's arc. Worth your time if season one clicked with you at all.
