JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
Oshimeter
Synopsis
A hard-nosed Japanese high schooler named Jotaro Kujo locks himself in a prison cell because he's convinced an evil spirit is possessing him. Turns out it's not a spirit — it's a Stand, a physical manifestation of his fighting energy called Star Platinum, and it can punch things really, really fast. His grandfather Joseph Joestar shows up to explain all this, along with the fact that their family has been tangled up with a century-old vampire named Dio Brando, whose recent revival is causing problems for everyone with Joestar blood. This 1993 OVA from Studio APPP adapts the Stardust Crusaders arc across 6 episodes, and it leans hard into the drama and brutality of the source material. The art style is muscular and exaggerated in a way that feels closer to Fist of the North Star than most shounen — characters strike poses that shouldn't work but absolutely do. The Stand system is what sets this apart from something like Bleach or Hunter x Hunter, where power matchups rely on raw strength. Here, every fight is a puzzle, because each Stand has wildly specific abilities that force creative solutions. The tone is action-packed but carries genuine emotional weight when the stakes hit close to home. If you want a condensed, hard-hitting version of JoJo before committing to the longer TV adaptation, this OVA is a solid entry point with its own distinct atmosphere.
