Synopsis

Built to serve and programmed to love chocolate, this android dutifully serves a King she genuinely cares about from within a grand fantasy castle. She prepares a whole anniversary dinner for him, he doesn't show up, and she decides she's done — packs up and walks out into the wider world to figure out what she actually wants. That's the setup, and honestly it's a charming one. The story follows her as she stumbles into a group of roguish outlaws called the Smashers, led by a guy named Widoshiku, and starts navigating life outside the comfortable walls she's always known. There's something quietly interesting about watching an android grapple with feeling neglected and deciding her own emotions matter enough to act on. The tone is light and comedic throughout — this isn't a heavy watch by any stretch. At just under 11 minutes, it's a single OVA, so it commits to one small slice of Chocola's story rather than trying to be anything sprawling. If you've spent time with shoujo fantasy like Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne or early 2000s titles like Full Moon wo Sagashite, the aesthetic and energy will feel familiar and comfortable. If Chobits made you curious about android characters trying to understand their place in the world, Chocola covers similar emotional ground in a much lighter key. It's a short, breezy watch from 2001 that doesn't overstay its welcome.
