Initial D Fifth Stage
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Ever since he was a kid hauling tofu down a mountain pass, Takumi Fujiwara turned himself into one of the best downhill racers in Japan. By the time Fifth Stage rolls around, he and Keisuke Takahashi are the main drivers for Project D, an amateur racing team that's been systematically dismantling the best street racers across multiple prefectures. Now they're headed to Kanagawa — the so-called holy land of street racing — where the local teams aren't just fast, they're organized. Kanagawa's top crews have set up something called the "Four Lines of Defense," basically a gauntlet designed specifically to stop Project D in its tracks. Each battle is a genuine puzzle of driving technique and car setup, and Ryousuke Takahashi's tactical mind gets tested as much as the drivers' reflexes. The Eurobeat soundtrack still slaps, the pass battles still have that signature tension where you're watching tire grip and racing lines instead of magic powers, and the character arcs for both Takumi and Keisuke reach some satisfying places across these 14 episodes. If you've been following Initial D up to this point, this is where the stakes feel the most earned. And if you're into racing anime like Wangan Midnight or MF Ghost, this is the series those exist in the shadow of. Fifth Stage doesn't reinvent anything — it just delivers exactly what the franchise does best, with opponents worth caring about.
