Inexpressive Kashiwada and Expressive Oota
📖 SYNOPSIS
Every thought that crosses Akito Oota's mind shows up on his face before he even opens his mouth — his teacher literally catches him mid-prank just by looking at him. Across the classroom sits Hiyori Kashiwada, a girl whose expression never changes. Not when she's surprised, not when she's annoyed, not ever. Naturally, Oota makes it his personal mission to get a reaction out of her. Scares, pranks, weird schemes — he tries everything, and every attempt blows up in his face while Kashiwada just sits there, completely unbothered. The thing is, what starts as a one-sided game of "make the stone-faced girl flinch" gradually turns into something more genuine between them, and watching that shift happen through their everyday school interactions is where this 12-episode TV series really finds its groove. Studio Polon leans hard into the facial expression contrast, and the animation actually does a lot of subtle work with Kashiwada's micro-reactions that you start picking up on over time. The whole vibe is warm and low-stakes — middle school comedy with a slow-building romantic undercurrent. If you liked the teasing dynamic in Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san but want the roles slightly rearranged, or if Komi-san's communication gap humor worked for you, this one hits a similar sweet spot. Based on a web manga, it's a cozy watch that doesn't ask much of you but keeps pulling you back in.
