Hime-chan no Ribbon
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Tomboyish and thirteen, Himeko Nonohara wishes she could be a little more like her graceful older sister — and then a princess from the Magic Kingdom shows up in her bedroom looking exactly like her. That's the setup for Hime-chan no Ribbon, a 61-episode shoujo TV series from 1992 that takes a familiar magical girl premise and gives it a genuinely clever twist: the magic ribbon Himeko receives doesn't grant her superpowers or let her fight monsters. It lets her transform into any person she sees, for exactly one hour. Go over that limit, and she's stuck that way permanently. It's a low-stakes power with surprisingly high personal consequences — she's using it to navigate middle school, a crush on an older classmate, and the general awkwardness of figuring out who she actually wants to be. Her little stuffed lion, Pokota, is also alive and talking, which adds a warm, slightly absurd charm to the whole thing. The character writing is patient; Himeko's growth feels earned rather than rushed. If you grew up watching Fancy Lala or Sugar Sugar Rune, this scratches a similar itch — grounded in everyday school life but warmed by just enough magic to feel special. And if Ultra Maniac was your entry point into older shoujo, Hime-chan sits comfortably in that same cozy, romantic, early-90s neighborhood. It's not flashy. It just quietly does its thing well.
