Synopsis

Long before she rose to become the legendary leader of Section 9, Motoko Kusanagi was a young military cyborg trying to figure out who she actually is — and who's pulling her strings. This movie takes you back to 2027, one year after a devastating non-nuclear war, where New Port City is barely holding itself together. A bombing hits the city, a military officer tied to arms dealing gets assassinated, and the investigation pulls together characters you might recognize: Aramaki from Public Security, Batou with his sleepless cybernetic eyes, and Kusanagi herself, still working under military command in the secretive 501st Unit. The whole thing plays out like a layered conspiracy thriller wrapped in cyberpunk aesthetics, with Kusanagi questioning her own memories and autonomy along the way. Production I.G handles the animation, and it looks exactly as sharp as you'd expect from them. The tone is deliberately mysterious and cerebral — less action spectacle, more slow-burn detective work with philosophical weight underneath. If you liked the existential dread of Psycho-Pass or the moody atmosphere of Ergo Proxy, this sits comfortably in that space. It's also a solid entry point if the original Ghost in the Shell timeline feels intimidating, since it's an origin story that stands on its own as a single movie. The pacing is tight, the world-building is dense without being overwhelming, and it treats you like an adult who can piece things together.

Quick Takes

I cannot comprehend the hate that this prequel series gets. People are far too nostalgic about who voices who. I think the characters are quickly, and tightly, getting defined and the combat is some of the best GitS has to offer so far!
