Synopsis

Mid-ghost-story, high school freshman Mai Taniyama gets interrupted by a cold, sharply-dressed teenager named Kazuya Shibuya, and discovers he actually investigates the supernatural for a living. Through a series of clumsy mistakes involving broken equipment and an injured assistant, Mai ends up working for his paranormal research company. She calls him 'Naru' almost immediately, because he is genuinely insufferable in the most entertaining way possible. What makes Ghost Hunt work is that it takes the ghost-hunting premise seriously. Cases are multi-episode arcs, the investigations use real methodology, and the team that assembles around Naru includes a monk, a shrine maiden, a Catholic priest, and a spirit medium — all with different approaches and different beliefs about what they're dealing with. It creates this genuinely tense procedural atmosphere where you're never quite sure what kind of supernatural entity you're up against or how it's going to be resolved. The tone is dark and slow-burn. Don't go in expecting jump scares every five minutes — this is more creeping dread, strange children, and rooms that feel wrong. Think closer to Shinrei Tantei Yakumo or early Shiki than anything action-heavy. If you've bounced off horror anime that felt cheap or rushed, this one takes its time building atmosphere. It's 25 episodes adapted from a manga, and the case-based structure means it's easy to get pulled through one more arc before you realize how late it is.

Quick Takes

Talk about a finale! The escalation from spirits to full chaos, then Ayako stepping up, and finally Naru revealing what he’s capable of—it all lands harder than expected. That hospital ending too actually gave it a weird calm after the storm. Definitely don't miss this last one.
Felt like a full-blown horror movie compared to the usual investigation! Between the house catching fire and a literal army of zombies storming the base to get to Naru, I was actually on the edge of my seat. Easily the most chaotic and high-stakes penultimate ep possible.
This ep felt like everything was spiraling at once—fear, possession, and people barely holding it together. I liked how Mai’s dream logic actually mattered in real-time, not just as spooky hints. That Kuji ritual scene? Intense, but also kind of messy in a realistic way.
