Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Young, privileged, and restless, Albert de Morcerf is a French aristocrat who feels like something's missing from his comfortable life. While attending a carnival on the moon city of Luna in the year 5053, he crosses paths with the Count of Monte Cristo — a wealthy, magnetic stranger who seems to know exactly who he is and what he wants. Albert is immediately drawn to him. The Count is charming, sophisticated, a little unsettling, and before long Albert is bringing him back to Paris and introducing him to everyone he knows. That's where things start to get complicated. This is a sci-fi reimagining of the Alexandre Dumas novel, and it works better than it has any right to. The setting blends 19th-century French aristocracy with spaceships and futuristic cities, and rather than feeling gimmicky, it gives the story this strange, timeless quality. The animation style is genuinely unlike anything else — layers of bold textile patterns and textures overlaid on 2D characters, almost like stained glass in motion. The soundtrack matches the drama beat for beat. The tone is slow-burning and atmospheric. This isn't an action show. It's about manipulation, class, trust, and what revenge actually costs. If you enjoyed Le Chevalier D'Eon's blend of history and darkness, or Ergo Proxy's moody world-building, Gankutsuou scratches a similar itch. It's 24 episodes, produced by Gonzo, and it only gets heavier as it goes.
