EPISODE CONTEXT
Picking up directly from Alphonse's capture, episode 34 serves as the payoff to that abduction arc, channeling the rescue mission into one of the series' defining moral turning points for Edward. Sitting at the two-thirds mark of the 51-episode run, this is where the show begins hardening its protagonists for the darker conflicts ahead with the Homunculi. It leads directly into 'Reunion of the Fallen,' which deepens character backstories and escalates the overarching war against the series' central antagonists.
