Fist of the North Star
Oshimeter
Synopsis
In a post-nuclear wasteland where roving gangs prey on whoever's left alive, Kenshiro wanders armed with a martial art that can make people explode by poking them, searching for the man who stole his fiancée and left him to die. That's the setup for this 109-episode 1984 TV series, and honestly, it's about as straightforward as anime gets — but the execution is what makes it stick. Hokuto Shinken, the fighting style Kenshiro uses, revolves around hitting pressure points that cause the human body to destroy itself from the inside. The results are grotesque, creative, and weirdly satisfying. Every episode has Kenshiro rolling up on some gang of oversized thugs terrorizing villagers, and you already know how it ends, but the show makes you want to watch it happen anyway. There's a rhythm to it — brutality, then genuine tenderness. Kenshiro barely speaks, but when he does, it lands. The tone is dark and emotional in ways you wouldn't expect from something this violent. It earns its dramatic moments instead of forcing them. If you liked Berserk's bleak world and lone warrior energy, or if JoJo's Bizarre Adventure's over-the-top masculinity and posing appeal to you, this is where a lot of that DNA comes from. Violence Jack fans will feel right at home with the wasteland setting. It's old-school, it's bloody, and it holds up better than it has any right to.
