Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Two years after saving the world, Cloud Strife is delivering packages and avoiding his friends — that's what his life looks like now. That's where Advent Children picks up — not with a triumphant hero, but with someone quietly falling apart. He's carrying guilt he can't shake, a mysterious disease eating away at him and the kids around him, and three new threats who've shown up looking for something that should have stayed dead. This is a movie, not a series, so it's lean — pure setup and payoff in under two hours. The CGI holds up surprisingly well even by today's standards, and the action sequences are genuinely unhinged in the best way: motorcycle chases through ruined cities, sword fights that ignore gravity completely, the kind of thing you pause and rewind. Nobuo Uematsu's soundtrack does a lot of heavy lifting emotionally, too. If you've played the original FFVII game, this is basically a reunion with characters you already care about, which makes the quieter moments hit harder. If you haven't played it, the film still works as a standalone dark fantasy action movie — think Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV in tone, or Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within if that film had actually been good. The vibe is somber throughout, not a feel-good adventure. Cloud isn't trying to be a hero here. He's just trying to get through the day, and that tension makes the action sequences feel earned rather than decorative.
