Fighting Spirit: Rising
Oshimeter
Synopsis
With the Japanese Featherweight belt already around his waist, Makunouchi Ippo is in a position that makes this interesting — this isn't a story about getting to the top, it's about what happens when you're there and everyone wants to knock you off. Rising is the third season of Hajime no Ippo, and it picks up with Ippo defending his title while new challengers line up claiming they've figured out how to shut down his Dempsey Roll. The tension isn't just whether he wins, it's whether his signature technique has a shelf life. Meanwhile, his gymmate Aoki is chasing his own shot at the Japanese Lightweight title, and the show balances Ippo's intensity with Aoki's more comedic energy in a way that keeps the 25 episodes from ever feeling one-note. Madhouse and MAPPA handled production on this one, and the boxing sequences are genuinely some of the best animated fight choreography in sports anime — realistic footwork, weight shifts, the whole thing. The character work runs deep too. These aren't just fighters, they're guys with real insecurities about what strength even means. If you liked the raw emotional stakes of Ashita no Joe or the gritty atmosphere of Megalobox, this hits similar notes but with more technical depth in its portrayal of the sport. Fans of psychological sports storytelling like One Outs will appreciate how much strategy goes into each bout. It's intense, it's funny, and it earns every emotional beat.
